Frequently Asked Questions

  • Customers MUST provide a 24-hour notice via email to request a rebooking or full refund/credit for any reason. If Westcave cancels due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, customers will receive an email notice and a full refund. To cancel, click the "Cancel Booking" link under the picture of the grotto on your confirmation email. If you have any difficulties, please contact us by sending an email to info@westcave.org. No-shows will be charged the full price. If your tour is not canceled, you must still provide 24-hours advanced notice to request a refund or rebooking for any reason.

  • Yes, we accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, Discover) and accept tap to pay.

  • The hike is about 1 mile, roundtrip, rated as moderate to difficult. Visitors hike in and out of the canyon by way of a long, winding, uneven staircase built into the slope of the canyon. Once in the canyon, there are additional steps, rocks and roots to navigate. We encourage visitors to wear sturdy shoes, use handrails, and bring along a walking stick if needed.

  • Children love to learn and explore the outdoors. Strollers are not allowed in the Canyon, Grotto, or Cave area due to the 100-foot staircase and the nature of the trail. Please be aware the hike is 1.5-2 hours long and you may have to carry your baby/toddler for most of the mile-long hike.

  • As a private non-profit nature preserve, access to our canyon and waterfall area is by guided hikes only to protect our fragile ecosystem. All guided hikes are limited to 25 individuals, and tour times can fill quickly.  

    Guests do notneed a reservation to explore our trails on the Uplands. While the Uplands does not feature pools, waterfalls, or caves, it offers a peaceful walk through the scenic Live Oak/Ashe Juniper savanna. On the Uplands, you will be able to utilize our 2 bird blinds, learn from interpretive trail signs, and check out our prairie restoration area.

  • No. Pets are not allowed on Westcave property. While we understand your love for furry companions, domestic animals—no matter how well-behaved—are predators by nature. Their presence, including their scent, can stress or displace native wildlife.

    As a private nonprofit organization, Westcave reserves the right to refuse service to individuals who do not comply with our policies. Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are not protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and may be refused entry.

    Service Animals are permitted but must remain on a leash and on trail at all times, and owners are responsible for waste removal.

  • Please DO NOT take a ride share (ex. Uber, lyft) to Westcave. We are outside the service range for pickups, and you may become stranded.

  • There is no swimming at Westcave or access to the Pedernales River.

  • Dress comfortably in tennis or hiking shoes, preferably with ankle support. In cooler weather, dressing in layers is recommended. Hats, sunscreen, a camera, and sunscreen are recommended as well.

    Binoculars, walking sticks, & explorer backpacks are available to borrow.

    While water is available, we recommend bringing your own water / reusable bottle.

    Picnic tables are available if you bring food or snacks, but grilling isn't allowed.

    Nearby favorite restaurants include Verdes Mexican Parilla, Route 12 Filling Station, and many local restaurants in Dripping Springs.

  • No, there is no access to the Pedernales River from Westcave. If you'd like to access the river, we recommend visiting Milton Reimers Ranch Park, only 2 miles east of the Westcave entrance.

    Visitor's cannot leave their car at Westcave and walk to Hamilton Pool. To access Hamilton Pool, a Travis County-operated preserve, you must enter with your vehicle through their entrance, 1 mile away.

  • Two composting toilets and sinks for hand washing are available for guest usage. Cleaning and disinfecting procedures are in place.
