Environmental Learning Center
This 3,000-square-foot, award-winning building blends architecture with nature. From its solar observatory to its rainwater catchment system and regional materials, every detail invites visitors to explore the connections between the natural world and the way we live. The Environmental Learning Center is open when Guided Canyon Tours are in operation.
Designed for Discovery
As a nonprofit nature preserve, all facility use at Westcave must align with our mission of inspiring people to develop a lifelong practice of enjoying and protecting nature.
Solar Observatory
A small opening in the roof projects sunlight onto a 28-foot meridian line marked with each day of the year. As the sunspot moves throughout the day and shifts with the seasons, visitors can observe the relationship between the Earth, the sun, and the passage of time.
Horizon Skymap
A large circular map embedded in the floor shows where the sun rises and sets during different months of the year. By standing at its center, visitors can connect Westcave’s location to the changing sky above.
Nature’s Numbers
A Fibonacci spiral in the floor reveals mathematical patterns commonly found in plants, shells, waves, animal horns, and galaxies. The related proportions of the golden rectangle also appear throughout the ELC’s interior design.

Guided Hike to Grotto (2-hour Activity)
Prepare yourself – the majestic beauty of our unique Texas Hill Country nature preserve will leave you breathless! Our expert-guided tours take visitors from an arid savanna through a limestone crevice down a 100-foot staircase into a sheltered canyon of lush plant life. At the head of the canyon stands Westcave, with a stunning 40-foot waterfall replenishing the emerald pool below. Visitors will go behind the waterfall and into a one-room limestone cave. The experience is a 1-mile, roundtrip, moderate to difficult hike from the parking lot. Visitors hike in and out of the canyon by way of a long, winding, uneven 125 step staircase built into the slope of the canyon. Once in the canyon there are additional steps, rocks and roots to navigate. We encourage visitors to wear sturdy shoes and bring their own walking stick if needed.
$20/adult (minimum charge of $300)
Maximum number of 60 people
This is a one-mile round trip moderate to difficult hike.
