Richard Louv
Author of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder
Since its publication in 2005, Richard Louv's national bestseller Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children From Nature-Deicit Disorder has spawned an international movement in communities throughout the world to get children back into nature and an avalanche of interest and inspiration for families, educators, health professionals and environmentalists across the nation. The book sheds light on the negative implications of our children's diminished connections to nature, and shares new research that demonstrates the power of nature in alleviating maladies that afflict our children, including depression, obesity and attention-deficit disorder.

| Westcave Preserve inspires kids and their families to develop lifelong practices of valuing and enjoying nature. We connect kids and their families to nature by providing experiences and programs that foster the discovery, exploration, and conservation of nature. Located 34 miles west of downtown Austin, we welcome more than 7,000 people each year to this place that many consider to be the "crown jewel" of the Texas Hill Country. In 2006 Westcave launched an Austin area initiative to bring unexpected partners together in an effort to better connect kids to nature. This effort has since grown into the Austin Children in Nature Community comprising nature centers, builders, landscape architects, educators, physicians and health professionals, and clergy along with many others in a mission to act on the importance of getting our children back to nature.
